Sound of Tulsa - Jordan Beaver

The smell of cigarettes swarming the floor, low lighting, crowded venues, and busy to empty bars are the elements of a universal experience of a concert or performance. This photographic project depicts the music scene in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which is one scattered among venues, bars, and nightclubs. The experience does not solely revolve around that of the performers, but rather encompasses the elements of the whole experience, such as the attendees and the physical place that work together within a subculture. These aspects are the building blocks for the atmosphere perceived by an audience.

The experience aims to activate all five of the human senses, and these photographs try to reflect that. This project bounces between the before, the during, and the after of a show. The exterior space, interior decor, and personal attire give context to the environment and subcultures of individuals. Alcohol can alter this experience for those attending, and the proximity of the crowd to one another creates a blurry line between personal and public space.

In popular culture, the artist or band is the primary focus of photography when centered around the music industry. Sound of Tulsa bridges the overlooked elements of a show with the viewer, bringing the audience and place to the spotlight as well.
